Hemja water project

Introduction:

Hemja village is located in one of the remote places of Pokhara, where 90% of the people depend on agriculture for their living. The total population has been estimated to be about 10,000 from ward no 1 to 9.The village lies under the management of Village Development Committee. The village doesn't have any proper facilities like telephone communication, health post or a police station etc. The drinking water system of this village has been frequently seen to be of the worst type, as many children and villagers has been frequently suffering from various waterborne diseases like diahorrea, dysentery, cholera and typhoid etc everyday. So having noticing this pathetic condition of the children and people of this village, our two volunteers from Sweden, Ms Anna Skaldeman and Ms. Daniella Kronvall, were very concerned about it. So along with them we humbly requested Ms. Betina Hoijer, Director of Swedasia Travels, Sweden to do something about it. She immediately responded by taking the water sample from the main tank for lab tests in Sweden and soon found out that the water was very polluted with different types of bacteria, causing water borne diseases. After knowing this we along with the members of Snow View Eco-Project students and teachers went to inspect the management of the water tank and prepared the following report after extensive observation and interview.
As per inspection done on 2004/5/28.Members involved in this Project

    (Inspection under progress)
Through extensive observation and interview with Mr.Kharananda Giri (the main caretaker of Hemja Water supply tank) by the eco- project members has been found out that there are only one tank with a capacity of 75000 liters for 10,000 population of Hemja. from ward no 2,3 and 4 which means 7.5 liters per person. The system of safe drinking water is hardly seen. There are only about 65 water taps supplying water to 10,000 population of Hemja.
Condition
The water collection system is very old fashioned following only decantation and sedimentation method, which shows the main reason for being infected with various types of water borne diseases. As source of the water is very open, without any filters or cover, the in tank gets very dirty and muddy during rainy season because of the mud falling down from the mountains.
There is no filtration system in the tank and on top of it, they have never been using chemical substances like chlorine to kill the germs. During the winter season the source of water dries up and creates water scarcity in the village.

WHAT CAN BE DONE
The Hemja water supply system needs a complete renovation. The absence of filter tank is making villagers and children to suffer from different water borne diseases, so a complete new tank with filtering capability should be immediately constructed to save the lives of the people of Hemja village. We would humbly like to request you to help us out to build a filter tank to save the lives of the children and people of Hemja. We need funds to built the filter tank supply pipes and taps in the village.
