‘Alu Mahotsav’ in Hemja

The 3rd series of Alu Mahosav (Potato Festival) kicked off in Hemja Village Development Committee of Kaski District from Friday. Hemja is famous for potato production
Minister for Land Reform Bhim Prasad Gautam inaugurated the festival amidst a function organized in Hemja. The festival aims to promote agriculture and tourism of the VDC and help improve the livelihood of farmers.
A total of 62 stalls - 12 from the restaurant operators and 50 from agriculture and research sector- have been displayed in the festival.
Display of potatoes and fresh vegetables, various cuisines of potatoes, cultural demonstrations, and tourism marathon are the main attractions of the festival.
A total of 15 items of cuisine made up from potato have been also put on the fair.
According to local farmers, this year the potato production in the VDC has decreased by around 40 per cent as compared to the last year. The average potato production of worth Rs. 120 million has been taking place in the VDC each year.
Due to the availability of potato, attraction of visitors has been increasing each year to the festival. Beside Hemja, farmers of neighboring VDCs including Lahachok, Ghachok, Rivan, Machhapuhhre, Dhital, Kaskikot and Salyan will benefit from the festival.
